Used to determine sett boundaries by their appearance in latrines, these tiny plastic pellets can be mixed with a suitable food mixture such as peanuts and molasses and placed near the set for the badgers to ingest.

These pellets are supplied as 1kg in a lidded white bucket for convenient storage. This should be sufficient for an 'average' survey, though the quantity required will depend on badger behaviour and sett size.

We also supply pellets in a 1kg Gripseal Bag.

Please note: All colours supplied are consistent RAL shades - images shown may not reflect the exact shade supplied.

The purpose of bait marking surveys is to establish territory size and boundaries of badger clans. Badgers (Meles meles) use latrines at the edge of their territories to demarcate their home range. A detailed survey is carried out to locate all setts and well-used latrines and dung pits within the area of interest. Each sett is assigned a different colour. Bait (peanuts and molasses mix) containing indigestible coloured marker pellets (with relevant colour assigned to each sett), is placed outside each sett entrance. Through recording the location of different coloured pellets found in dung pits, it’s possible to determine territory boundaries and which setts are used by which social group.

The best time for undertaking badger surveys is February to April, coinciding with a peak in territorial activity and a period when vegetation cover is at a minimum, which enhances the probability of detection of field signs. A secondary but less obvious peak occurs in October. Surveys can be undertaken outside these favourable periods but field signs will be both less abundant and harder to spot.

As a rule, only main setts should be bait-marked. Use a peanut:pellet ratio of 15:1 by volume, and a molasses:peanut mix ratio of 1:8. The quantity of bait points and the length of time that baiting is carried out depends on the sett size and badger behaviour. A good starting point is 25-30 bait points, each of around 50-100ml, in a 15-20m radius. Expect to feed for 15-20 days, or longer if badgers are cautious.
