An excellent general-purpose bat box, the Schwegler 2F-DFP Bat Box is suitable for summer use by a wide variety of species (and particularly liked by pipistrelles). It’s the ideal ‘starter’ box to see if there are crevice loving bats in your area. The 2F-DFP is the same shape as the 2F but the front panel is fitted with a second inner wooden grooved panel, creating a space for crevice inhabiting bats.

The front panel can be removed for inspection/cleaning.

Being made of woodcrete the box will last for years and provide a stable environment inside. The unit is also multi-purpose - If it remains occupied after a number of years, it is easily converted to a 2F Bat Box or 2M Bird Box by simply changing the front panel. (Contact us for more information).

Which bat species?
Crevice-dwelling bats such as Nathusius' pipistrelle, Daubenton's bat and Pipistrelle Bats.

Usage (Which part of the life cycle)
Summer use - seasonal roosting.

Structure
The 16cm diameter bat box provides a crevice for inside for the bats, with a 4cm x 1.7cm (approx.) entrance via the front panel.
If a larger cavity (rather than a crevice) is required, then the 2F model is needed.

Specifications:
See More Info tab for technical details.

Mounting/Fixing
See In The Field Tab for mounting details including which direction the box should face.

Dimensions: 33 x 16 x 16 cm.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Bats are a schedule 1 protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. It is illegal for any member of the public to disturb a roost, handle or kill any bat. Bat boxes, therefore, may only be inspected by a licensed bat worker. However, you can monitor your bat box without disturbance: look for mouse-sized droppings beneath the box as a clue to occupation or observe from a distance at dusk to see if bats are exiting the box to hunt.

In The Field
Mounting
We recommend fitting to a wall or tree at least 3m above the ground, so a stepladder or short ladder will be needed for this minimum height. The maximum height is 6m.
At 4.1kg the unit is not particularly heavy, so a cherry picker is not needed.

Make sure that a clear horizontal approach is available for the bats.

Aspect:
Generally, bats prefer a roost that faces south as they love warmth. (The black paint on the box also helps to absorb heat).
If it is on an existing feeding or flight route you are more likely to get occupation.
Ideal locations include:
• open, sunny positions on woodland tracks
• in clearings
• where the wind has blown trees over
• quiet tree-lined roads
• large gardens
• cemeteries

Ponds or streams nearby are also helpful – more insect food for the bats.

Bats sometimes decide to relocate. If groups of 3 to 5 boxes are placed close by they may remain in the area and move into one or more of the other boxes.

Fixings included/excluded
Includes nest box, hanger and aluminium nail.

Cleaning
Don’t use any cleaning sprays as bats have a highly developed sense of smell and chemicals may deter them from using the unit again. Instead just clean the unit by removing the bat droppings. Do this in winter as the unit is a general purpose bat box and unlikely to be used for hibernation.

Note: If it has to be cleaned earlier, don’t clean the box before the beginning of September. Bats don’t leave their summer quarters before then, and they are very sensitive to being disturbed.
