These bat boxes contain an outer shell constructed from recycled plastic made from bale wrap as well as the internal roost chamber being constructed from FSC Certified oriented strand board (OSB). OSB is made from compressed waste wood chips and flakes and as a result has a roughened surface which therefore provides lots of grip for bats to move around, hang and roost from. This UV stabilised recycled plastic is welded all together creating a long-lasting durable box.
Within the UK, there are a variety of bat species in which need to be cared for and require different requirements so to accommodate as wide number of bats as possible, we have the Crevice and Cavity Eco Bat Box available. These boxes differ internally as the crevice box features two internal crevices 22 mm wide, whereas the cavity box features a single internal cavity 60 mm wide with rough walls for bats to hang from, but both remain identical from the exterior. The crevice box is ideal for pipistrelle bats but the cavity box hosts bats like the Brown Long-Eared bats and Noctules.
In terms of cleaning and maintenance, this is made redundant as any droppings will simply drop out of the entrance slot which is down to the box having angled baffles included within it. At the base of the box, the protected landing ladder makes access to the box easy for the bats.
The ideal location for these boxes to be placed would be on buildings and trees where they can be mounted at higher positions preferably in a sheltered sunny place. In an ideal situation, there would be multiple boxes placed facing in different directions to allow for a range of conditions. Sometimes it can be several years before the boxes have residents so it’s important to remain patient but you can tell if they host life by keeping an eye out for droppings on the landing area or chittering noises from inside on warm afternoons and evenings which would be strong indications of activity.
