More about Swifts:

Swift populations have decreased by over 50% in the last 20 years and a large factor in this is loss of habitat. If every new build contained provision for these beautiful birds then we might start to reverse the decline. Swifts join us for a few months each Summer, spending their winters on the wing in Africa. Generally, they mate for life and often will return to the same nesting site.

Swifts will use any material they can gather whilst on the wing to build their nest, including feathers, seeds, paper, and straw. They normally lay 2 or 3 eggs at 2-3 day intervals, with the young hatching a few days apart. Feeding on a diet of insects, young Swifts will start to move around the nest at around 2-3 weeks old, starting to do ‘press-ups’ to strengthen their wings! They will spend a lot of time looking out from the nest, preparing to leave, and it’s little wonder as once they do leave they remain on the wing for the next 3 years, eating, sleeping, and mating in the sky!

Why are nest boxes important?

Natural nest sites are being lost having devastating consequences for bird species. Birds are an essential component of functioning ecosystems and have a direct impact on human populations and millions of other species. It is therefore important to provide our feathered friends with a home.
