This nest box is incorporated into the wall and then covered with the building materials that form the building's outer skin, leaving an entrance hole that is at least 30mm tall and 60mm wide.
- Consistent internal temperature
- Entrance hole can be altered to attract other species
Why are nest boxes important?
Natural nest sites are being lost having devastating consequences for bird species. Birds are an essential component of functioning ecosystems and have a direct impact on human populations and millions of other species. It is therefore important to provide our feathered friends with a home.
DIMENSIONS (MM): 310 x 170 x 170
ENTRANCE HOLE: 30 x 65
This box can also be used to help other species by altering the size of the entrance hole that is left open. A gap of around 35mm or so will help hole-nesting species such as House Sparrows or members of the tit family. Leaving most of the entrance exposed and siting below 5 metres can help Robins, wagtails, and even Black Redstarts in areas where the species is known to breed.
SITING: This Swift building block can be used for new construction or renovation. It is designed to be built into a wall, where you have a narrow cavity. The block sits halfway across the front wall leaving 120mm approximately hanging into the cavity. It is essential to give the back of the block some support. Assuming you have a cavity, which is 150mm plus then add insulation behind particularly if you have a warm space behind.
The insulation in the cavity can simply continue behind the block, so there is no thermal bridge. If insulation has to be cut away with a 100mm cavity, it is important to cut the insulation around the circumference of the block.
Preferably install the built-in block in the gable end on the north or east side of the building 3 courses down from the top. This gives an ideal height for the block and is an area where there will be little disturbance from humans. Keep the flight path of the nesting box clear so do not allow trees or shrubs to grow in front of the wall. Swifts like to breed in colonies; therefore, it is advisable to build in several building blocks together. The distance between the mounting blocks must then be at least 40 centimetres. No nesting material needs to be added. The recommendation is that you should place a minimum of 1 block per new dwelling so on a 30-house development you would have 30 blocks on the site.
MAINTENANCE: No maintenance required - Swifts use little nest material and do not make dirty marks on the façade.
