This durable Woodstone Nest Box is the perfect nesting site for Tawny Owls. Tree cavities and building spaces are becoming rare, and so this artificial nest presents an ideal home.
Why are nest boxes important?
Natural nest sites are being lost having devastating consequences for bird species. Birds are an essential component of functioning ecosystems and have a direct impact on human populations and millions of other species. It is therefore important to provide our feathered friends with a home.
MATERIAL: FSC Certified Wood, Woodstone
DIMENSIONS (MM): 280 x 305 x 520
WEIGHT (KG): 15
SPECIES: Tawny Owl
SITING: A sturdy mounting bracket and two adjustable securing points near the base allow for straightforward fixing to a tree.
The nest box should be sited at least 3m above the ground and on woodland edge, parkland or large gardens where it won't be in the sunlight all day. There should be a clear flight path to the entrance and be in an area that is normally free of human activity, although Tawny Owls and Jackdaws may use busier sites if the box is placed above 5m. Tawny Owl chicks will leave the nest sometime before they are able to fly, so it is important that they have access to branches with cover to hide in during the day. An ivy-covered tree is ideal.
We recommend adding some nesting material such as peat.
MAINTENANCE: Research has shown that it helps to add a layer of loose dry material such as wood shavings or shredded bark to the nest box before the breeding season starts, which may be as early as January for Tawny Owls. In an exceptional year Stock Doves may still be nesting as late as November, so the best month to clean the boxes is December. The front of the nest box is hinged and secured with a latch, so cleaning is simply a matter of opening the front, removing any contents and replacing the shavings or bark.
