Why do we need to protect bats?
Bats play an important role within our environment. As well as performing some pollination, bats are a natural control of insect populations as these are their main food source. Bats are also a good indicator species of environmental health, with changes in populations reflecting local biodiversity.
Bats are a schedule 1 protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. It is illegal for any member of the public to disturb a roost, handle or kill any bat. Bat boxes therefore may only be inspected by a licensed bat worker. However, you can monitor your bat box without disturbance, look for mouse-sized droppings beneath the box as a clue to occupation or observe from a distance at dusk to see if bats are exiting the box to hunt.
MATERIAL: Brick – Cheddar Red
DIMENSIONS (MM): 215 x 65 x 100
DURABILITY: F2 S2 – Fully Frost Resistant
ENTRANCE DIMENSIONS (MM): approx. 110 x 25
COLOUR: We hold stock of the Ibstock A0610A (Cheddar Red) - also available in other colours. Please contact us for details (firstname.lastname@example.org)
SITING: Bat bricks should be positioned where they will be warmed by the sun and have a clear flight path to/from the box (i.e. not obscured by trees or buildings). The boxes should also not be lit by external lighting, so positioning away from streetlights will be best.
It is important that cats cannot access bat boxes, as they can catch bats as they leave the roost – so no ledges near the box, and it should be at least 3m from the ground.
A cavity chamber may need to be constructed to maintain an area free of insulating material where bats can roost.
MAINTENANCE: Bats and their homes are protected by law so it is important not to disturb them. The Bat Block does not require maintenance as the design allows droppings to fall from the entrance.
