The Schwegler 2F Universal Bat Box is a general-purpose bat roost designed for use by a wide range of woodland and building-dwelling species. Manufactured from durable woodcrete, it provides a stable internal microclimate and long service life, making it suitable for long-term conservation projects.

This model is often used as an introduction to bat mitigation and enhancement work, offering a readily accepted resting and temporary roost. The enclosed, cavity-style design reflects natural roost features such as woodpecker holes and hollow tree limbs, which are increasingly scarce in managed landscapes.

Key Features

  • General-purpose summer roost for multiple bat species
  • Durable woodcrete construction for thermal stability
  • Textured, domed internal roof area for secure hanging
  • Removable front panel for inspection and cleaning
  • Convertible to a 2M bird nest box with replacement front panel
  • Supplied with galvanised steel hanger and aluminium nail

Please note: If smaller crevice-style roosting spaces are required rather than a cavity interior, the Schwegler 2F-DFP Bat Box model is recommended.

Suitable Species

Typical woodland species known to use enclosed boxes such as the 2F include:

  • Lesser Noctule
  • Common Noctule
  • Daubenton’s Bat
  • Nathusius’ Pipistrelle
  • Bechstein’s Bat

Building-dwelling species may also use this style of box, depending on local populations and habitat context.

Siting Guidance

  • Install on trees or buildings
  • Minimum installation height: 3–4 metres
  • Ensure a clear horizontal flight approach

Maintenance

The front panel can be removed for inspection and cleaning. To maintain optimal conditions, remove accumulated droppings once or twice per year, ensuring the box is not occupied before undertaking any work.

SPECIES: Species such as the Lesser Noctule and the Common Noctule, as well as Daubenton’s, Nathusius’s Pipistrelle, and Bechstein’s Bat, are typical representatives of Bats that live in woods and forests. So-called “House Bats” are mainly those that like to roost in buildings, for example, in roller shutter boxes, behind window shutters, niches, and gaps. These are, above all, Serotine, Mouse-Eared, and Pipistrelle Bats. These Bats prefer, for example, flat boxes or round boxes with several hanging panel partitions.

SITING: install in a tree or on buildings, minimum height 3-4 m. Ensure that a clear horizontal approach is provided for bats.

MAINTENANCE: To ensure optimum accommodation, the Bat Box should be cleaned once or twice a year, or the bat droppings should be removed. The front panel can be removed for inspection and cleaning.
