The Schwegler 2FN bat box is a highly successful 'general purpose' box for woodland bat species such as the common noctule (Nyctalus noctula). Made of Woodcrete, it will last for years and being breathable it provides a stable environment inside. (The exterior black paint helps to absorb warmth).
It can be fitted against trees in woods, forests and parks, allowing the bat to land on the tree and then crawl in through the rear entrance (and later on leave by the front).
The domed roof provides an increased internal height and also enables the bats to hang in clusters. The larger space (and larger entrances) accommodate larger bat species.
Inside there is a secondary floor. This provides protection against small predators, wind and bright light.
Mostly self cleaning, the front panel can be removed for inspection and cleaning if a large number of bats have used the box.
Which bat species?
This model has been successfully in use for many years for woodland species of bats.
On one occasion 28 common noctule bats (Nyctalus noctula) with 9 young Bats were recorded in a 2FN bat box.

• Lesser noctule
• Nathusius’ pipistrelle
Usage (Which part of the life cycle):
Seasonal roosting, maternity roosting.
Provides a large, domed cavity for the bats to hang in clusters.
There are two entrances at either side of the base:
• One at the bottom of the front panel
• One at the rear of the base, against the tree.

See In The Field Tab for mounting details including which direction the box should face.

Bats are a schedule 5 protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. It is illegal for any member of the public to disturb a roost, handle or kill any bat. Bat boxes therefore may only be inspected by a licensed bat worker. However, you can monitor your bat box without disturbance, look for mouse-sized droppings beneath the box as a clue to occupation or observe from a distance at dusk to see if bats are exiting the box to hunt.
- In The Field
We recommend fitting to a tree 3m-6m above the ground, so a stepladder or short ladder will be needed for the minimum height.
At 4kilos approximately the box is not particularly heavy and doesn’t a cherry picker for the installation.
The ideal aspect is so the box receives some sun during the day ie South, South West or South East. If it is on an existing open feeding or flight route you are more likely to get occupation.
Aluminium nail and galvanised steel hanger
Droppings can fall directly out of the bottom of the bat box cavity, so the unit is mostly self-cleaning. However, if a large number of bats use the box, then we do recommend checking/cleaning the unit by removing the front panel.
