Build Your Own Bat Box Kit

The Build Your Own Bat Box Kit is a simple way to make a bat box at home, whether you’re working with children, running a group activity, or just want a hands-on project.

Each kit comes with pre-cut FSC Certified exterior grade plywood panels, plus the nails, screws, sandpaper and instructions needed to put it together. No sawing is required — just a hammer and a screwdriver.

As natural roost sites become harder for bats to find, a bat box can provide a useful alternative in places where there are fewer suitable spaces. Once built, the finished box provides a dry, sheltered roost with minimal draughts, which is important for bats.

This kit is designed to offer a roost site for the Common Pipistrelle, the UK’s most common bat species.

Siting guidance:

• Bat boxes can be mounted on buildings or trees
• Position the box as high as possible
• Choose a sunny location that is also sheltered
• Where possible, install several boxes facing different directions to provide a range of conditions
• Bats may take time to find and use a new box, and it can take several years before one is occupied
• Signs of use include droppings on the landing area and chittering noises from inside on warm afternoons and evenings
