Coir is a natural and renewable by-product of the coconut industry and is an excellent growing medium. Although ultimately biodegradable it has a long life span even in water and is therefore an unrivalled product for erosion control and habitat establishment on waterways.
Coir log rolls are used extensively to provide bank stabilisation on waterways, motorways etc. Ideally they should be installed at water level to reduce the impact of wash, allowing natural establishment of bank side vegetation and are therefore most effective. They can be planted with marginal species to speed up establishment and create an instant visual effect.
They are a nominal 300mm in diameter and 3m in length and contain approx10-15kg of coir fibre per meter. They are bound round with the option of ether coir mesh, which creates 100% biodegradable product, or synthetic twine which ensures a long lasting solution.
As well as providing bank stabilisation, they have been used to create demarcation lines on national trails, and as retaining walls for temporary garden displays.
Where the water depth is greater than 300mm the logs can be raised to the water level by using multiple layers, or by using hazel faggots bundles as a base. This is held in place by chestnut stakes which are inserted 3-4 per 3meters. The coir logs can be planted up which means that the roots of the plants will form a natural bank by the time the coir has eroded.
