The Green&Blue Bee Post is a freestanding, sculptural bee nest designed to provide long-term habitat for cavity-nesting solitary bees. Developed by Green&Blue from the award-winning Bee Brick, it is intended for use in landscaping schemes, public spaces and gardens.
Designed and made in the UK, the Bee Post creates nesting opportunities for solitary bees, which make up around 90% of UK bee species. These bees are non-swarming, do not produce honey and have no queen to defend, making them non-aggressive and safe to encourage around people, pets and public areas.
Design & Use
The Bee Post is cast as a single vertical concrete form containing approximately 150 nesting cavities. These cavities provide protected nesting space for solitary bees, supporting pollination in both urban and rural environments.
It is designed as a permanent, outdoor feature and is suitable for incorporation into landscape design, redevelopment projects and large gardens.
Construction & Installation
The Bee Post is designed to be set directly into the ground. Installation requires a concrete foundation to ensure long-term stability.
Prepare a hole of minimum 40cm x 40cm and 40cm deep. Put 10cm concrete in the bottom of the hole, set post into the centre of that hole and then back-fill around the Beepost and up to ground level with concrete. This is the minimum depth to set the Bee Post, but you can set them deeper if different heights are desired.
For best uptake, the Bee Post should be positioned in a warm, sunny location, facing south, with no vegetation blocking the nesting cavities. It should be located close to bee-friendly planting to provide nearby forage.
Maintenance
The Bee Post is maintenance-free under normal use. If cleaning is required, cavities can be checked in October once nesting activity has finished. Cavities that remain blocked from the previous year may be cleared using simple tools such as a tent peg and pipe cleaner.
