Schwegler No. 16 Swift Nest Box

The Schwegler No. 16 Swift Nest Box is a durable wood-concrete nest box designed to provide a long-lasting nesting site for swifts on buildings and other suitable structures. It can be installed on external façades, beneath roofs, within external wall structures or into insulation layers, depending on the project requirements.

This model has an entrance on the underside and is suitable for exposed and sunny positions. It can be used on a wide range of structures, including houses, industrial buildings, churches, road structures, walls, cliffs and rock faces.

Swifts are highly faithful to their nesting sites and may return to the same breeding location for many years. Installing suitable nest boxes can help replace nesting opportunities lost through building renovation, repair work or modern construction methods.

Siting & Installation

The Schwegler No. 16 Swift Box can be installed on external façades or beneath the roofs of buildings. Suitable sites include houses, industrial buildings, churches, road structures, walls and, where appropriate, cliffs or rock faces.

The box can be installed within an external wall to a maximum depth of 17cm, ensuring that the underside entrance hole remains clear and unobstructed. It can also be attached to the surface of an external wall, or installed within a layer of rendering or external insulation, using the optional Schwegler fixing bracket.

The recommended installation height is approximately 6-7m above ground level. Swifts are social birds, so installing several boxes together can help encourage colony formation where suitable habitat is present.

If the box is painted, only breathable external wall paint should be used. The use of a Schwegler Swift Nest Mould is recommended.

Maintenance

Cleaning is possible but not usually essential. The front panel can be removed by turning the safety catch, allowing access for inspection or cleaning when required.
