Why do we need to protect bats?
Bats play an important role within our environment. As well as performing some pollination, bats are a natural control of insect populations as these are their main food source. Bats are also a good indicator species of environmental health, with changes in populations reflecting local biodiversity.
Bats are a schedule 1 protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. It is illegal for any member of the public to disturb a roost, handle or kill any bat. Bat boxes therefore may only be inspected by a licensed bat worker. However, you can monitor your bat box without disturbance, look for mouse-sized droppings beneath the box as a clue to occupation or observe from a distance at dusk to see if bats are exiting the box to hunt.

SITING: This is suitable for fixing in buildings or on trees. The box can be mounted onto trees or on buildings and is best positioned at a height of between 3 to 6 metres. Bat boxes should ideally be sited in open sunny positions and in groups of 3 to 5 boxes facing different directions to provide a variety of micro-habitats.
MAINTENANCE: The front panel can be easily removed for cleaning and inspection. If the box is being used by large numbers of bats it is advisable to check it regularly to remove the droppings. Please note that once bats have inhabited a roost site they may only be disturbed by licensed bat workers.
We also supply the much larger Schwegler, woodcrete hibernation box.
Bat Hibernation
Hibernation is essentially a long period of deep sleep, often called a 'torpor' that allows animals like bats to survive the winter. The body temperature lowers and the metabolic rate slows right down meaning that most of their energy is conserved and they can live on their fat store rather than foraging for food, when there is little about.
Bats need hibernation roosts that are relatively cool and remain at a consistent temperature, often choosing hollow trees, caves, or artifical roosts such as this one.
