The Mammal Society footprint tunnel is a new and innovative survey tool to track footprints of small to medium mammals.
How does it work?
Footprint tunnels (or tracking tunnels) are a non-invasive tool to look for the presence of mammals in a habitat by identifying their footprints. The tunnels are placed along hedgerows or other edge habitat overnight and baited. Mammals walk over ink-pads to reach bait inside and leave their footprints on special paper as they do so.
It's a great survey for the whole family to find out what passes through your garden in the night. The 22cm high tunnel will track smaller mammals such as hedgehogs, mice etc. Adult badgers and foxes are unlikely to fit down the tunnel.
Scientifically speaking, is it effective?
The footprint tunnel was initially developed at Nottingham Trent University in an attempt to replace spotlight transect surveys, which weren't very effective at detecting hedgehogs. The Mammal Society ran trials, which found the tunnels to be statistically more effective at detecting hedgehogs, a difficult species to survey for.
What do the Mammal Society do?
One in four of our native mammals is threatened with extinction, and many others are in decline. With Britain now recognised as one of the most nature-depleted countries in the world, urgent action is needed. The Mammal Society is a charity which is working to give Britain's wildlife a better future by:
- Keeping a constant watch on the conservation status of our mammals and making this information freely available
- Making conservation more effective by providing guidance on what to do and where to do it
- Educating the public and professionals about wild mammals, training people to survey them, and sharing the latest research
- Working in partnership to restore native mammal populations and re-establish functional ecosystems.

We will always use a reputable courier company and require a signature on delivery. Smaller items are usually shipped using Royal Mail or DPD, and larger items are sent using TNT or Tuffnells. Palletised deliveries are with Pallex.
We will email you shipping confirmation after your order has been despatched. Where available, you will also receive tracking notification by email or text. If you need to track your parcel urgently then please contact us.
We can deliver to anywhere in the world, but you may need to contact us for a quote.
If your order doesn’t qualify for free shipping then UK mainland delivery starts at £7.92 ex VAT, while Highlands and Islands delivery starts at £12.50. You can calculate shipping costs using the basket.

Important Information About Backorders
At Wildcare there are times when items are only available on a backorder basis, either due to high demand or if the item is a special order item. We refer to these as ‘backorder items.
Backorder items are clearly listed on our website as ‘Order To Reserve Stock (Backorder)’. Items that are in stock and ready to be shipped immediately are listed as ‘In Stock’.

We cannot guarantee that a backordered item will come back into stock or be delivered for a specific date, however we will always do our best to keep you informed and updated.

Returns
If you receive damaged items or the wrong goods, please let us know straight away so that we can arrange for them to be returned to us and replaced as quickly as possible.
