Our Kent Bat Box provides a range of crevice sizes, allowing for different species and temperatures. It has one small 15mm crevice, one larger 20mm crevice, and a 20mm open crevice between the fixing battons on the back of the box meaning that it provides a range of micro-climates that the bats can move between.

Key Features:

  • Three crevice options
  • Self-cleaning - droppings simply fall out
  • Made from 22mm thick untreated timber
  • Based on an original design by the Kent Bat group

Why do we need to protect bats?

Bats play an important role within our environment. As well as performing some pollination, bats are a natural control of insect populations as these are their main food source. Bats are also a good indicator species of environmental health, with changes in populations reflecting local biodiversity.

Bats are a schedule 1 protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. It is illegal for any member of the public to disturb a roost, handle or kill any bat. Bat boxes therefore may only be inspected by a licensed bat worker. However, you can monitor your bat box without disturbance, look for mouse-sized droppings beneath the box as a clue to occupation or observe from a distance at dusk to see if bats are exiting the box to hunt.

MATERIAL: Made from UK grown Douglass Fir timber for durability

DIMENSIONS (MM): Approx 220mm wide x 150mm deep x 340mm tall

CAVITIES (MM): 20

WEIGHT (KG): 1.7

SITING: Four countersunk fixing holes are drilled. Mounting accessories not supplied. The box can be fixed to walls, or to trees by using tying wire. Fixing may be done by the use of brackets, durable bands, or wires. Boxes are best fixed as high as possible in sheltered/shaded locations where is a clear flight to the box entrance. Exposure to the sun for part of the day is acceptable. Several boxes may be placed near together. It should be the intention that boxes are to remain in position for several years. Boxes should not be disturbed, so check for occupancy by watching at dusk for bats to emerge.

MAINTENANCE: Self-cleaning - droppings simply fall out of the bottom.
