Simple spherical woodcrete home for the wren.

or

The Schwegler 1ZA Wren Nest Box is a spherical nesting and roosting box designed specifically for Wrens. Made from durable Schwegler wood-concrete, it provides a sheltered, enclosed nest space that is well suited to shady, low-level locations such as hedges, thickets, overgrown areas and dense garden planting.

Wrens naturally nest close to the ground in undergrowth and semi-shaded areas. The 1ZA Wren House provides a rounded, enclosed nesting space that can be lined by the birds with moss, feathers, fur and other natural materials. It may also be used as a winter roosting space.

Male Wrens often build several nests before the female selects one, so installing more than one 1ZA Wren Nest Box can help support their natural breeding behaviour.

Key Features

  • Provides an enclosed, round nesting space
  • Made from durable Schwegler wood-concrete
  • Weather-resistant and breathable material helps prevent condensation
  • Offers protection from nest predators
  • Can also provide winter roosting shelter
  • Suitable for shady, low-level locations in dense vegetation
  • Integrated stainless steel wire rope for hanging
  • Can also be placed on brushwood or garden clippings
  • Two-part design allows cleaning in autumn or winter

Suitable Species

This nest box is designed for Wrens. If installed in a more open, unobstructed location, it may also be used by other cavity-nesting birds, including Blue Tits, Coal Tits, Great Tits, Tree Sparrows and House Sparrows.

Siting

Hang the 1ZA Wren Nest Box in a shady location within undergrowth, hedges, thickets, heavily overgrown areas or bushes. Wrens prefer low, sheltered nesting locations with plenty of surrounding cover.

The box can be hung using the integrated stainless steel wire rope, which can be looped over a suitable branch. It can also be placed on a pile of brushwood or garden clippings.

Maintenance

Avoid checking the box between April and June to reduce the risk of disturbing nesting birds. Cleaning is best carried out during autumn or winter.

To clean, remove the suspension cable and lift the upper shell away from the lower shell. Once cleaned, place the two halves back together and secure them again using the cable.

SITING: Wrens like to nest near the ground, in a ‘green wilderness’ and in the undergrowth. They are not particularly good flyers, preferring to hop about in the undergrowth. They like shady places – in hedges, thickets, heavily overgrown areas, and bushes as well as balconies.

Hang the nest box in the undergrowth, in a shady place. It can also be placed upon a pile of brushwood or garden clippings, for example. If hung in a totally unobstructed place it will also attract other types of birds that nest in holes and cavities, including Blue Tits, Coal Tits, and Great Tits, as well as Tree and House Sparrows.

MAINTENANCE: We recommend that you do not carry out any checks between April and June in order to avoid disturbing the brood. The nest box, which comprises two shells, should therefore ideally be cleaned during the autumn or winter months. To do this, remove the cable from which it is suspended. The upper shell can be easily lifted off the lower one. When the cleaning has been completed simply place the two halves together again and secure using the cable
