The Eco Barn Owl Nest Box requires no maintenance and has a very long life expectancy!

or

The Eco Barn Owl Nest Box is a durable, high-capacity nesting and roosting solution designed to provide a secure environment for Barn Owls in both rural and agricultural landscapes. Developed in collaboration with the Barn Owl Trust, this model is manufactured primarily from 100% recycled plastic and is built for long service life with minimal ongoing maintenance.

Suitable for installation inside buildings such as barns or externally on trees and walls, the Eco Barn Owl Nest Box combines robust construction with practical features to support breeding pairs and their young.

Key Features

  • Manufactured from UV-stable 100% recycled plastic
  • Lightweight (approx. 9.5 kg) yet load-tested to 100 kg
  • Suitable for indoor or outdoor installation
  • Integrated landing and exercise platform with fence
  • Curved, overhanging roof to shed rain and snow
  • Ventilation and concealed drainage to reduce condensation
  • Side access hatch for cleaning and licensed monitoring
  • Separate two-piece fixing bracket for safer installation

Construction & Materials

The main structure is manufactured from Low-Density Polyethylene board made using 100% recycled plastic. The removable sacrificial floor is made from FSC® certified Oriented Strand Board (OSB), designed to wick condensation away from the nest. The floor should be replaced periodically as part of routine maintenance.

Installation

The box is supplied with a separate heavy-duty mounting bracket. The rear bracket is fixed securely to a tree or wall, allowing the box to hook safely into place. A lower stabilising bracket secures the base.

  • Indoor use: mount high within a barn or roof space (ideally above 3 metres)
  • Outdoor use: mount at least 4.5 metres above ground level
  • Choose a shaded position to reduce overheating
  • Face away from prevailing wind where possible
  • Ensure owls have clear access and good visibility of the entrance

When siting in open countryside, select mature trees or structures near rough grassland, hedgerows or woodland edges. Avoid locations within 1 km of major fast roads due to collision risk.

Maintenance

The Eco Barn Owl Nest Box is designed for longevity. If occupied by Barn Owls, accumulated nest debris should be removed every 2–3 years, or when debris exceeds approximately 80 mm in depth. If Jackdaws or pigeons use the box, it should be cleared annually at the end of the breeding season. The wooden floor may require replacement after several years of use.

Please note: Barn Owls are a Schedule 1 protected species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. Occupied boxes must not be disturbed except by licensed individuals. Cleaning should only take place between November and January, and preferably during dry, calm conditions.

SITING: site in a mature tree, 3m high, which is near hedgerow or woodland edge, and rough grassland. The tree should overlook open countryside, and there should be rough grassland for hunting within 1km.

The birds will tolerate noise and activity if they can hide in a box. However, you should not site a barn owl box within 1 km of a motorway or other fast, unscreened, main roads due to the high risk of road deaths. Pastoral habitats are best. Avoid urban, suburban, woodland, and high mountain areas.

MAINTENANCE: it is important that the box depth is maintained by clearing out the box once it has more than about 80mm of nest debris. If Jackdaws use the box it must be cleaned out every year (wear gloves and a dust mask). Boxes used only by breeding Barn Owls will need clearing out every 2 or 3 years.

The box has a sacrificial wooden floor which we recommend you replace every few years. This is designed to wick condensation away from the nest.

Remember that under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, it is an offence to disturb breeding Barn Owls so nest boxes should only be cleaned out between November and January – and preferably in dry, calm weather, so that any roosting owl does not get flushed out into the rain or wind.
