This box is ideal for barn owls and the safe rearing of owlets.
- Sturdy front platform across the full width of nesting box for owlets to exercise on
- 440 mm depth to ensure the young owls cannot leave the owl box until they are ready
- A generous weather "canopy" that protects both the entrance hole and the landing platform
Why are nest boxes important?
Natural nest sites are being lost having devastating consequences for bird species. Birds are an essential component of functioning ecosystems and have a direct impact on human populations and millions of other species. It is therefore important to provide our feathered friends with a home.
Large single chamber nest box with an entrance hole at top of the front panel, landing/exercise/roosting platform at front, 2 large inspection/access hatches with covers to sides. The back panel extends above and below the box for handling and fixing. Canopy across the front for weather protection. Drained floor.
MATERIAL: Made from precision-cut interlocking panels of exterior grade FSC Certified birch plywood, treated with non-toxic water-based preservative/stain. Key panel joints silicon sealed to reduce water ingress. Inspection/access covers held to box with toggle fasteners. Panels stapled together with surface sunk staples.
DIMENSIONS (MM): 740 x 590 x 500
INTERNAL DIMENSIONS (DEPTH; MM): 340
HATCHES (MM): 280 x 330
ENTRANCE (MM): 130 x 120
WEIGHT (KG): 7
SPECIES: Barn Owl
SITING: Back panel extends above and below box for fixing to tree or wall etc. Fixing holes in panel extensions. Large holes in the upper extension for the rope can be used to carry the box up the ladder to the mounting position. Designed for use either inside barn or other suitable building or externally fixed to a tree etc.
When fixing the box to a tree, owls benefit from the additional shelter. Place in open countryside in isolated trees or trees that overlook open habitat. Avoid urban, suburban, dense forest, and high mountain areas. Do not place within 1 km of motorways.
MAINTENANCE: It is important that the box depth is maintained by clearing out the box once it has more than about 80mm of nest debris. If Jackdaws use the box, it must be cleaned out every year (wear gloves and a dust mask). Boxes used only by breeding Barn Owls will need clearing out every 2 or 3 years.
