The Schwegler No. 5 box is made from woodcrete and in use in woodlands all over Europe. It is a large cylindrical nesting box that closely imitates the natural nesting conditions of a hollow tree, providing an excellent and successful artificial alternative for the Tawny Owl.
Occupants: Tawny Owls, Stock Doves, Jackdaws. Goosanders and Goldeneyes too, in some areas.
Why are nest boxes important?
Natural nest sites are being lost having devastating consequences for bird species. Birds are an essential component of functioning ecosystems and have a direct impact on human populations and millions of other species. It is therefore important to provide our feathered friends with a home.

SITING: Owl boxes are installed in parks and forests. The nest box should not be any lower than 10ft off the ground and should face NE to SE if exposed to elements. Allow a clear flight path to the entrance of the box if placing it in a tree or bush.
Note: Female Tawny Owls may attack humans when they feel they are in danger. It is best not to install the nest box in a regular human visited area.
The floor should be covered by a layer of sawdust or similar material.
MAINTENANCE: the front panel can be removed for inspection.
