Dormouse Footprint Tracking Complete Kit - 50 Tunnels & Accessory Pack

Dormouse footprint tracking tunnels are an effective, non-invasive survey method developed by the People’s Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) to help detect the presence of hazel dormice (Muscardinus avellanarius) in woodlands, scrub, hedgerows and other suitable habitats.

Each tunnel consists of a square plastic tube with a flat plywood insert, designed to be fixed to the underside of branches in a similar way to a dormouse nest tube. Paper strips and an ink tracking medium are placed inside the tunnel so that animals leave identifiable footprints as they pass through. Dormouse footprints are distinctive and can usually be separated from those of wood mice and other small arboreal mammals.

This complete kit contains 50 tunnels, plywood inserts and all the consumables required for a typical 3-month survey, assuming tunnels are checked twice monthly.

Important Information

Cable ties or Velcro straps are not included and must be purchased separately for installation.

Tracking tunnels should be installed securely on branches with good habitat connectivity and checked regularly throughout the survey period in accordance with current dormouse survey guidance.
