The 1FE is especially suitable for use by you during conversions, renovations, or insulation work on older types of buildings and historic buildings.
Bats prefer to remain in familiar nesting places and their survival can be supported by retaining their sites within walls. Installation of multiple units is recommended. With a depth of just 8cm, the unit can easily be integrated into the building and rendered.
The woodcrete construction is tough and weather-resistant. It is breathable/porous, so it maintains a stable temperature inside and also provides a rough surface for the bats to cling to.
- Maintenance-free and easy to install
- Install on or in the surface of exterior walls
- Open rear to allow continued use of in-wall nesting
- The optional back panel can be added to turn unit into a standalone roost
- Compatible with air-permeable exterior paint
- Woodcrete construction
Schwegler 1FE Back Panel 10615
This optional backplate changes the unit into a standalone bat box. This means it no longer provides access to the wall cavity. Instead, the wooden panel creates a cavity inside the box. As for the woodcrete shell, the wooden panel is also roughened to help the bats gain a foothold (claw hold) inside.
Why do we need to protect bats?
Bats play an important role within our environment. As well as performing some pollination, bats are a natural control of insect populations as these are their main food source. Bats are also a good indicator species of environmental health, with changes in populations reflecting local biodiversity.
Bats are a schedule 1 protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. It is illegal for any member of the public to disturb a roost, handle or kill any bat. Bat boxes therefore may only be inspected by a licensed bat worker. However, you can monitor your bat box without disturbance, look for mouse-sized droppings beneath the box as a clue to occupation or observe from a distance at dusk to see if bats are exiting the box to hunt.
DIMENSIONS (MM): 300 x 300 x 80
WEIGHT (KG): 5.1
INCLUDES: Entry cover without fixing material.
SPECIES: Building-inhabiting Bat species.
SITING: Build-in to or fix against an exterior wall (fixings not included). Be careful not to allow access to breathable roofing membranes. We recommend a ladder to install the unit at the top of the building (at least 3 meters above ground) so that bats are more likely to find the access and the panel will be safe from tampering. The ideal aspect is so the box receives some sun during the day. If it is on an existing feeding or flight route and provides access to an existing next, you are more likely to get usage. Please ensure there is a clear flight path for the approach and departure.
MAINTENANCE: Maintenance-free. No cleaning required as droppings fall away through the front opening.
