The 1FE Schwegler bat access panel provides a smart, bat-friendly way for them to enter into cavity walls. This is particularly useful as bats prefer to continue using familiar nesting places. When older/historic buildings are refurbished or converted, these units can be installed so that bats continue to have access to their existing roosts. (We recommend installing multiple units).

Alternatively, with an optional back panel (available separately) the bat box works as a standalone roost unit.

The unit is maintenance-free as droppings run down the sloped entrance hole and fall away.

Fixing is simple – there are two pre-drilled holes at the front through which screws (not supplied) pass for fixing to an exterior wall. With a depth of just 8cm, the unit can easily be integrated into the building and rendered. It can also be painted with air-permeable exterior paint.

One more thing to know – the bat box is made from Schwegler’s Woodcrete, a tough, weather-resistant blend of wood and concrete that will last for years and won’t rot, warp, crack or leak. Woodcrete is breathable/porous, so it maintains a stable temperature inside and also provides a rough surface for the bats to cling to. Combine all this with a box design that prevents water entering it and you have a unit that will protect bats for decades.

OPTIONAL BACK PLATE FOR 1FE
This optional backplate changes the unit into a standalone bat box. This means it no longer provides access to the wall cavity. Instead, the wooden panel creates a cavity inside the box. As for the woodcrete shell, the wooden panel is also roughened to help the bats gain a foothold (claw hold) inside.

Which bat species?
Building-inhabiting bat species.

Usage (Which part of the life cycle):
As this unit provides access to existing nests within wall cavities, the usage depends on the bats and their nests.

Structure:
Designed as a flat box with a through route to provide access to the building’s cavity wall (behind the unit).
The entrance is at the lower part of the front panel and is 25cm x 3.9cm approx. The entire rear of the unit is open.

Specifications:
See More Info tab for technical details.

Mounting/Fixing:
See In The Field Tab for mounting details including which direction the box should face.

Dimensions: 30 x 30 x 8 cm.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Bats are a schedule 1 protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. It is illegal for any member of the public to disturb a roost, handle or kill any bat. Bat boxes, therefore, may only be inspected by a licensed bat worker. However, you can monitor your bat box without disturbance, look for mouse-sized droppings beneath the box as a clue to occupation or observe from a distance at dusk to see if bats are exiting the box to hunt.

Mounting
Built-in to exterior wall. Be careful not to allow access to breathable roofing membranes.
Or fix against wall (with optional back panel).
We recommend a ladder to install the unit at the top of the building (at least 3 meters above ground) so that bats are more likely to find the access and the panel will be safe from tampering. Do bear in mind that this unit is 8kg if the optional back plate is included.

Aspect:
The ideal aspect is so the box receives some sun during the day. If it is on an existing feeding or flight route and provides access to an existing next, you are more likely to get usage.
Please ensure unobstructed approach and departure.

Fixings are not included

Cleaning:
None required as droppings fall away through the front opening.
