If you would like to accommodate bat inhabiting forests then the universal Schwegler 1FFH Bat Box is a good option for providing a suitable Summer roost site from early summer to late Autumn.

Key Features:

  • Rear compartment designed for large species and female colonies and their young, as well as groups of common noctules.
  • Internally, there are 2 separate compartments with clinging surfaces, hollows, and crevices where the animals can retreat.
  • The high ceiling inside ensures a favourable micro-climate.
  • Crevice inhabiting bats can use the small cavities of the forward compartment as a safe daytime sleeping area.
  • The narrow entrance hole provides sleeping bats with extra protection against predators and disturbances.

Why do we need to protect bats?

Bats play an important role within our environment. As well as performing some pollination, bats are a natural control of insect populations as these are their main food source. Bats are also a good indicator species of environmental health, with changes in populations reflecting local biodiversity.

Bats are a schedule 1 protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. It is illegal for any member of the public to disturb a roost, handle or kill any bat. Bat boxes therefore may only be inspected by a licensed bat worker. However, you can monitor your bat box without disturbance, look for mouse-sized droppings beneath the box as a clue to occupation or observe from a distance at dusk to see if bats are exiting the box to hunt.

MATERIAL: Woodcrete

DIMENSIONS (MM): 245 x 875 x 190

INTERIOR: 2 separate compartments with clinging surfaces, for Bats inhabiting crevices and tree hollows. Dimensions: 20 cm wide, 74 cm and 64 cm high, narrow entrance hole for protection against predators.

WEIGHT (KG): 16

INCLUDES: Nest box, stainless steel hanger, and aluminium nail.

SPECIES: The vertical and horizontal narrowing of the box makes it very suitable for all crevice-inhabiting Bat species, such as pipistrelle and noctule bats. It offers the animals optimum interior depth wherever it is hung up, i.e. back contact on and with the wood or wood concrete on the inside.

SITING: Trees, masts, raised hides. 4 supports built into the semi-circular rear surface ensure the universal box is stable, safe, and secure in windy weather. Best installed at 3 to 5 metres above the ground. Ensure a clear flight path to the 1FFH to encourage bats to inhabit it. Optionally, you can install using 2 Schwegler c-blocks

Bats need numerous roosts and retreats at all times. Even colonies move to different roosts after a few days, sometimes even daily.

It is possible to install groups of Bat Boxes of any type, thereby increasing the likelihood of inhabitation and ensuring their long-term use. Bats prefer the flight paths to their roosts to be unobstructed. This will reduce the time it takes for a box to be inhabited.

MAINTENANCE: Self-cleaning and maintenance-free. Use a torch or mirror on the underside of the box to check whether the box is inhabited. The universal box cannot be opened.
