The Magenta Bat 4 Bat Detector is an easy-to-use heterodyne bat detector designed for listening to bat calls in the field. It converts ultrasonic sounds, which are normally beyond the range of human hearing, into audible frequencies so users can hear bat activity as it happens.
Compact and straightforward to operate, the Bat 4 is well suited to amateur bat enthusiasts, wildlife watchers and introductory bat survey work. It features a large, illuminated frequency dial, one-handed volume and frequency controls, and a built-in front-facing weatherproof loudspeaker.
The detector can be tuned across a wide frequency range from 15 to 130kHz, allowing users to listen for a range of bat species. It also includes headphone and recorder output sockets, making it suitable for quiet listening or connecting to recording equipment.

Power
The Magenta Bat 4 uses 4 x AAA alkaline or rechargeable batteries. Batteries are not supplied.
Using the Detector
When looking for bats, the supplier recommends starting with the frequency set to 45kHz, as many bats echolocate around this frequency. Once bat activity is detected, the frequency control can be fine-tuned to achieve the clearest signal.
The detector only receives ultrasound and does not transmit any signal that would disturb bats.
