Live Traps

Live trapping is a proven method used by researchers and volunteers to monitor the presence and abundance of small mammals. However, some species, like water voles and shrews, are legally protected, so always check if a licence is required before trapping. These traps are ideal for monitoring voles, including capture-mark-recapture studies. Traps should be checked frequently, with food, water, and bedding provided to ensure the animals’ welfare until release.

For water vole monitoring, we offer specialist cage traps and Sherman traps with removable rear doors for nest box use. Handling and weighing tools for water voles and other small mammals are also available. We also offer specialist water vole fencing for translocations and exclusions.
