The Schwegler 1GS Brick Bat Roost is designed for bats that roost or hibernate in moist, sheltered locations such as caves, tunnels, cellars, culverts and under bridges. Made from a special lightweight concrete, the roost absorbs moisture from the surrounding environment to help create the humid conditions preferred by many underground-hibernating bats.

The 1GS can be used as both a winter hibernation roost and a summer daytime roost. Its internal niches, variable crevices and roughened surfaces are designed to suit bats that prefer close contact with the roost surface, including species using narrow spaces where both the front and back of the body can remain in contact.

The roost is accessed from the open base and can be installed on ceilings, walls or the curved interior surfaces of tunnels using the supplied adjustable, corrosion-resistant brackets.

Key Features

  • Brick bat roost for moist underground or sheltered locations
  • Suitable for winter hibernation and summer roosting
  • Special lightweight concrete absorbs moisture from the surroundings
  • Designed to create suitable humid conditions for bats
  • Variable internal crevices and niches for roosting bats
  • Five types and sizes of crevice
  • Horizontal and vertical crevices from 25mm to 50mm
  • Orientation radii help encourage adoption
  • Roughened surfaces allow bats to cling
  • Open base allows access and simple inspection from below
  • Self-cleaning design with no routine cleaning required
  • Supplied with adjustable, corrosion-resistant fixing brackets

Suitable Use

As a winter roost, the Schwegler 1GS can be installed in frost-protected locations where bats require stable, moist conditions for hibernation. Its internal height, volume and varying crevice sizes are designed for bats that prefer close body contact with the roost while hibernating.

As a summer roost, the 1GS can provide a daytime roosting space for bats using culverts, bridges and similar sheltered structures. It may be suitable for species such as Natterer’s Bat and Daubenton’s Bat, depending on the location and surrounding habitat.

Siting & Installation

Install the 1GS in an undisturbed, draught-free location where the air is moist. Suitable locations may include underground sites, caves, tunnels, cellars, culverts and sheltered spaces beneath bridges.

The roost should be protected from frost and prevailing winds if it is intended for winter use. For best results, fit the unit as high as possible within the enclosed space.

Direct contact with the wall or ceiling is important, as this helps the roost absorb available moisture from the surrounding structure and can make the unit more attractive to bats.

The supplied adjustable, corrosion-resistant brackets can be used to attach the unit to ceilings, walls or curved tunnel surfaces.

Inspection & Maintenance

The 1GS can be checked from underneath using a torch. Cleaning is not required, as the roost is self-cleaning.

Any inspection must be carried out without disturbing bats and only by a suitably licensed person where required.

Important Information

Bats and their roosts are protected by law. Roosts should only be inspected where appropriate and by a suitably licensed bat worker if there is any risk of disturbance.

Use as winter quarters: The 1GS can be installed in areas protected from frost, making it ideal for accommodating large numbers of these animals. The internal height and the volume have been carefully designed to meet the requirements of hibernating Bats, which prefer to have the back and front of their bodies in contact with the roost, and the interior of the 1GS recessed block with its variable cross-sections and niches is ideally shaped for this purpose.

Use as summer quarters: The 1GS is also ideally suited for summer use. Individual male Natterer’s Bats and also small groups of Daubenton’s Bats often roost on open culverts and under bridges. The 1GS block provides an ideal daytime roosting place for them and other types of Bats.

SITING: Install the unit in an underground location (or under a bridge) in an undisturbed spot free of draughts and where the air is moist. Make sure there is direct contact with the wall or ceiling so the unit absorbs the available moisture. This will be more attractive to bats and increase the likelihood of use.

We recommend fitting as high as possible above the ground, inside the enclosed space (whether that’s a culvert, a cave etc) so a stepladder or short ladder will be needed.

Adjustable, rustproof brackets are used to attach it to ceilings and walls and even to the rounded insides of tunnels. Direct contact with the wall or ceiling helps with the absorption of available moisture and encourages the Bats to colonise a site. Efforts to protect Bats are assisted if the 1GS block is installed in an undisturbed place free of draughts, and where the air is moist.

Once in place, provided it is protected from frost and prevailing winds it can be used by bats in the winter. The bat brick roost is also ideal for summer use.

MAINTENANCE: Can be very easily checked from underneath using a torch. Cleaning is not necessary (self-cleaning).

Mounting

The adjustable, rust proof brackets fix the unit to flat surfaces on ceilings and walls or even the curves inside a tunnel.

Do bear in mind the unit, despite being made of lightweight concrete, weighs 10kg.
