If you want to accommodate bats who prefer to roost or hibernate in the moist conditions of caves, tunnels, or cellars, then the 1GS Roost by Schwegler is a perfect choice. This lightweight concrete unit absorbs moisture from the local environment to create the right climatic conditions.

Some hibernating bats prefer the front and back of their bodies to be in contact with their roost. The internal height and volume of the various niches and crevices inside the unit are perfectly suited to meet the needs of these bats. Due to its size, the unit is can cater to large numbers of bats.

Key Features:

  • Maintenance-free and easy to inspect
  • Simple to fit
  • Year-round use: hibernation or roosting
  • Orientation radii encourage adoption
  • Roughened surface
  • Access is via the open base of the unit

Why do we need to protect bats?

Bats play an important role within our environment. As well as performing some pollination, bats are a natural control of insect populations as these are their main food source. Bats are also a good indicator species of environmental health, with changes in populations reflecting local biodiversity.

Bats are a schedule 1 protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. It is illegal for any member of the public to disturb a roost, handle or kill any bat. Bat boxes therefore may only be inspected by a licensed bat worker. However, you can monitor your bat box without disturbance, look for mouse-sized droppings beneath the box as a clue to occupation or observe from a distance at dusk to see if bats are exiting the box to hunt.

Use as winter quarters: The 1GS can be installed in areas protected from frost, making it ideal for accommodating large numbers of these animals. The internal height and the volume have been carefully designed to meet the requirements of hibernating Bats, which prefer to have the back and front of their bodies in contact with the roost, and the interior of the 1GS recessed block with its variable cross-sections and niches is ideally shaped for this purpose.

Use as summer quarters: The 1GS is also ideally suited for summer use. Individual male Natterer’s Bats and also small groups of Daubenton’s Bats often roost on open culverts and under bridges. The 1GS block provides an ideal daytime roosting place for them and other types of Bats.

MATERIAL: Woodcrete

DIMENSIONS (MM): 430 x 200 x 200

INTERIOR CREVICES (MM): 25 to 50 mm, varying, horizontal and vertical. 5 types and sizes of crevice, Orientation radii to encourage adoption.

INCLUDES: Brick Roost, fixing bracket.

SITING: Install the unit in an underground location (or under a bridge) in an undisturbed spot free of draughts and where the air is moist. Make sure there is direct contact with the wall or ceiling so the unit absorbs the available moisture. This will be more attractive to bats and increase the likelihood of use.

We recommend fitting as high as possible above the ground, inside the enclosed space (whether that’s a culvert, a cave etc) so a stepladder or short ladder will be needed.

Adjustable, rustproof brackets are used to attach it to ceilings and walls and even to the rounded insides of tunnels. Direct contact with the wall or ceiling helps with the absorption of available moisture and encourages the Bats to colonise a site. Efforts to protect Bats are assisted if the 1GS block is installed in an undisturbed place free of draughts, and where the air is moist.

Once in place, provided it is protected from frost and prevailing winds it can be used by bats in the winter. The bat brick roost is also ideal for summer use.

MAINTENANCE: Can be very easily checked from underneath using a torch. Cleaning is not necessary (self-cleaning).

The adjustable, rust proof brackets fix the unit to flat surfaces on ceilings and walls or even the curves inside a tunnel.
