The 1GS Brick Roost by Schwegler is a year-round unit, targeted at those bats that prefer to roost or hibernate in moist conditions, underground or in caves, tunnels, and cellars.
The lightweight concrete (from which the unit is made) absorbs moisture from the local environment to create the right climatic conditions. (It’s also of a rough texture to help the bats cling to the surface).
Once in place, provided it is protected from frost and prevailing winds it can be used by bats in the winter. The bat brick roost is also ideal for summer use.
Some hibernating bats prefer the front and back of their bodies to be in contact with their roost. The internal height and volume of the various niches and crevices inside the unit are perfectly suited to meet the needs of these bats. Due to its size, the unit is can cater to large numbers of bats.
There is no need for cleaning as droppings will fall out of the base of the unit. Inspection (if necessary) is very easy – just shine a torch from underneath and you’ll be able to see directly into the brick roost.
Simple to fit with two adjustable, rustproof brackets that work for flat surfaces on ceilings and walls, or even the curves inside a tunnel.
Note that direct contact with the structure helps the unit to absorb the available moisture, making it more attractive to bats so that they will colonize the site.
Which bat species?
For bats that prefer to roost or hibernate in moist conditions, underground or in caves, tunnels, and cellars.
For example, individual male Natterer’s bats and also small groups of Daubenton’s Bats often roost on open culverts and under bridges. The 1GS unit provides an ideal daytime roosting place for them and other types of bats.
Usage (Which part of the life cycle):
Year-round use, from winter hibernation or summer roosting.
Interior Crevices: 25 – 50 mm, varying, horizontal and vertical. In all, there are 5 types and sizes of crevice including orientation radii to encourage adoption, all of the same, roughened concrete surface.
Access is via the open base of the unit.
See More Info tab for technical details.
See In The Field Tab for mounting details including which direction the box should face.
Dimensions: 20 x 42 x 20 cm.
Bats are a schedule 1 protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. It is illegal for any member of the public to disturb a roost, handle or kill any bat. Bat boxes, therefore, may only be inspected by a licensed bat worker. However, you can monitor your bat box without disturbance, look for mouse-sized droppings beneath the box as a clue to occupation or observe from a distance at dusk to see if bats are exiting the box to hunt.
The adjustable, rust proof brackets fix the unit to flat surfaces on ceilings and walls or even the curves inside a tunnel.
Make sure there is direct contact with the wall or ceiling so the unit absorbs the available moisture. This will be more attractive to bats and increase the likelihood of use.
We recommend fitting as high as possible above the ground, inside the enclosed space (whether that’s a culvert, a cave etc) so a stepladder or short ladder will be needed.
Do bear in mind the unit, despite being made of lightweight concrete, weighs 10kg.
Install the unit in an underground location (or under a bridge) in an undisturbed spot free of draughts and where the air is moist.
Two freely adjustable, corrosion resistant brackets
Cleaning is not necessary (self-cleaning).
