Why do we need to protect bats?

Bats play an important role within our environment. As well as performing some pollination, bats are a natural control of insect populations as these are their main food source. Bats are also a good indicator species of environmental health, with changes in populations reflecting local biodiversity.

Bats are a schedule 1 protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. It is illegal for any member of the public to disturb a roost, handle or kill any bat. Bat boxes therefore may only be inspected by a licensed bat worker. However, you can monitor your bat box without disturbance, look for mouse-sized droppings beneath the box as a clue to occupation or observe from a distance at dusk to see if bats are exiting the box to hunt.

MATERIAL: Woodcrete

DIMENSIONS (MM): Ø 280 x 440

WEIGHT (KG): 12

INCLUDES: 3FS incl. Hanger with Mounting Block and Aluminium Nails.

SPECIES: The smaller species such as Natterer’s, Whiskered, Daubenton’s, Pipistrelle and Nathusius’ Pipistrelle Bats, etc. can rear their young in a larger group without being disturbed. The interior of the cavity is aimed at precisely this.

SITING: Ideally, look for a spot that is at least 3m (10 feet) from the ground, sheltered from strong winds and exposed to the sun for part of the day. Position your box so it faces between southwest and southeast. Make sure there is a clear flight line in.

MAINTENANCE: The front panel can be easily removed for cleaning and inspection. If the box is being used by large numbers of bats it is advisable to check it regularly to remove the droppings.

WARRANTY: 25-year Guarantee
