Occupants: Tengmalm's Owls, Stock Doves, Jackdaws, Pygmy Owls and Hoopoes, occasionally Squirrels. Black, Green, and Grey Woodpeckers will sometimes spend the night in these boxes too.
Why are nest boxes important?
Natural nest sites are being lost having devastating consequences for bird species. Birds are an essential component of functioning ecosystems and have a direct impact on human populations and millions of other species. It is therefore important to provide our feathered friends with a home.
Owl boxes are installed in parks and forests, not only to promote the diversity of species but also as a means of controlling the Mouse population. Birds can be encouraged to use the box if a thick layer of wood shavings or sawdust is spread over the recess in the floor.
