The Vivara Pro WoodStone Starling Nest Box is a durable, insulated nest box designed specifically for starlings and other cavity-nesting songbirds. Manufactured from WoodStone, a robust blend of FSC-certified wood fibres and concrete, this nest box provides a stable internal environment that helps reduce temperature fluctuations during the breeding season.
Starlings are colonial nesters and often breed in loose groups, so installing multiple nest boxes within the same area can help encourage occupation and support local populations.
An internal block beneath the entrance hole allows young starlings to perch while defecating outside the box, helping to maintain cleaner nesting conditions within the chamber.

Why are nest boxes important?
Natural nesting cavities are increasingly scarce due to modern building practices, tree management, and habitat loss. Nest boxes provide essential nesting opportunities for birds such as starlings, whose populations have declined significantly in parts of the UK.

Siting
Install the nest box at least 2 metres above ground level on a tree, fence, or building facade. The entrance hole should ideally avoid facing southwest to reduce exposure to driving rain, and the box should not remain in direct sunlight throughout the day.
Do not add nesting material. Starlings often prefer to nest in proximity to one another, so several boxes can be installed together where appropriate.
The nest box can be mounted using the supplied screw or nail. Alternatively, the hanging bracket can be rotated 180 degrees for attachment using optional Velcro straps.
Maintenance
The nest box can be cleaned by opening the removable front panel. Cleaning should be carried out after fledging or during winter following a few days of frost. The security of the mounting should also be checked annually.

SITING:
Hang the nest box with the supplied screw or nail. No nesting material needs to be added.
Hang the nest box at a height of at least 2 meters along the edge of the forest or in the forest itself (or if another suitable location is available). Starlings like to breed close to each other, so it is recommended to hang up several nest boxes in the same area.
Optional: The nest box can also be attached to a tree without a nail or screw by means of Velcro. To do this, turn the suspension bracket 180 degrees at the rear.
MAINTENANCE:
Clean the nesting box once a year when the youngsters have fledged. To open the nest box simply turn the two screw hooks at the front 180 degrees, the front of the nest box can then be removed. If a second brood follows, the nest box must be cleaned again in the late autumn. The reliability of the suspension must also be checked annually.
