Wooden Hedgehog Nest Box
Product code: 10512
This exterior grade plywood hedgehog house has a fully built-in tunnel allowing access for even the largest hog while still avoiding unwanted predators. The nesting chamber is safely away from the tunnel entrance. A raised 'step' at the entrance enables the nesting box to be snugly nestled down, makeing it harder for predtors to interfere.
The house is cleverly designed with inbuilt ventilation, protected from blocking, to provide just the right temperature and humidity without draughts. Underfloor runners allow the air to reach the underside of the nesting box while allowing the nest box to be pushed easily into place in the undergrowth.
The lid is easily removed to allow access for cleaning and inspection.
Made from FSC Certified exterior grade European birch plywood.
Dimensions: 22 x 38 x 47 cm.
- In The Field
The hedgehog house should be placed in a quiet, sheltered area and ideally covered with dried leaves, twigs and other vegetation. Add some hay or dry leaves inside for the hedgehogs to make their nest with.
You can check if a house is occupied by placing something light in front of the entrance - if it is moved overnight then the house is in use.
Take care not to disturb the house during the summer - if it is being used as a nursery the female could abandon the nest.
If the house has is unoccupied after winter use (lat March to early April) you can clean it. If you treat the house for fleas make sure only to use organic Pyrethrum powers suitable for birds. Dog and cat treatments are too strong and may kill a hedgehog.
Hedgehogs will enjoy supplementary feeing. If you can't find specialist hedgehog food at your local garden centre you can substitute wet or dried cat food. And don't forget to provide a bowl of fresh water for your hogs!
