The Eco Hedgehog Hole Plate provides a simple way to create and protect a hedgehog access point through a wooden fence, gate or other garden boundary. The plate acts as a template for the correct opening size and can then be fixed around the hole to keep the access point visible, tidy and less likely to be blocked.

Hedgehogs need to move between gardens, green spaces and feeding areas to find food, shelter and mates. Creating a 13 x 13cm gap in a fence or wall can help improve access between habitats while remaining too small for most pets.

Made from 100% recycled plastic, the Eco Hedgehog Hole Plate is durable, UV-stabilised and designed for long-term outdoor use. The recycled plastic is produced from waste plastic, including agricultural plastic collected from UK farms.

Why Create a Hedgehog Highway?

Hedgehogs can travel up to a mile in a night while searching for food and mates. Enclosed gardens and solid fencing can restrict this movement, reducing the amount of habitat available to them.

By creating small access gaps between gardens, you can help hedgehogs move safely through connected habitats. Hedgehogs also feed on slugs, snails and other invertebrates, making them a useful visitor in wildlife-friendly gardens.

Siting & Installation

Use the Eco Hedgehog Hole Plate as a guide to mark and cut a 13 x 13cm opening in a wooden fence, gate or other suitable boundary. Once the hole has been made, fix the plate around the opening using suitable screws.

Position the access hole at ground level and ensure the route remains clear on both sides. Avoid placing obstacles, netting or garden materials in front of the entrance.

Hedgehog Safety

Avoid using slug pellets or other pesticides in areas where hedgehogs may forage, as poisoned slugs and snails can be harmful to hedgehogs. Fresh water and wildlife-friendly planting can help make your garden more suitable for hedgehogs and other wildlife.
