The Wildlife Acoustics Song Meter Surge Suppressor helps protect SM3, SM4 and SM5 family recorders from power surges caused by electrostatic discharge or electrical storm activity. It is recommended wherever microphones are mounted at height, such as on towers, masts or other exposed structures.
The surge suppressor is installed between the microphone cable and the recorder. It includes a grounding lug, which must be connected to a suitable earth ground so that electrical surges travelling down the microphone cable are diverted to ground before reaching the recorder.
The unit is supplied ready for use with SM4, SM4BAT, SM5 and SM5BAT recorders. An internal switch allows it to be configured for use with SM3 and SM3BAT recorders.

Installation & Grounding
The surge suppressor should be securely mounted to prevent movement in wind. The two cable ports are labelled for microphone and recorder connections, helping ensure the microphone is correctly detected by the Song Meter recorder.
The surge suppressor can only provide protection when it is properly grounded. Use a 12 AWG grounding wire, or thicker, with no more than 2m of wire between the suppressor and a grounded structure. The grounding wire should be connected to the grounding lug and then to a metal frame or other suitable grounded structure with a low-resistance connection.
If the recorder is powered using an external power source, the ground or negative conductor of the power source should also be connected to earth ground to help prevent electrical surges entering from the power supply side.
