The SMM-U2 Grounding Bracket is a stainless steel grounding accessory designed for use with the Wildlife Acoustics SMM-U2 ultrasonic microphone. It helps protect the microphone from electrostatic discharge and electrical surge damage when survey equipment is deployed in exposed locations.
This bracket is recommended where electrical storm activity is possible, or where the SMM-U2 microphone is mounted well above ground level, such as on a metrology tower, wind turbine or other tall structure.
A grounding wire (not supplied) is attached to the bracket and connected to earth ground. This helps direct electrical surges away from the microphone rather than through it. A stainless steel screen covers the top of the microphone and directs surges to the bracket and grounding wire.

Installation
The grounding bracket attaches directly to the SMM-U2 microphone. A grounding wire should be connected from the bracket to a suitable earth ground to provide a low-resistance path for electrical surges.
Wildlife Acoustics recommends using a 12-gauge or thicker wire less than 2m in length when connecting the bracket to earth ground. The shortest possible connection will provide the best path to ground.

Please Note
The SMM-U2 microphone is not included. For the best protection of Song Meter SM3, SM4 and SM5 series recorders, Wildlife Acoustics recommends using the Surge Protector (SKU 11332) in addition to the grounding bracket.
Comes with: screws, washers, lock washers, and nuts preinstalled in the correct holes.
Please note: This system will also provide some protection for the SM4 or SM3 series of recorders but note that the best protection for these is the Surge Protector for SM3/SM4.
NOTE: The SMM-U2 microphone is not included.
