The Building-Integrated Butterfly Box is a discreet wood-concrete shelter designed to provide overwintering space for butterflies during cold and wet weather. It can be incorporated directly into masonry, making it suitable for new-build projects, renovations and biodiversity enhancement schemes.
The box has a shallow design, allowing it to sit outside the cavity space. It can be installed into a wide range of façade types and, if set slightly recessed, can be finished with brick slips or render so that it blends into the building exterior.
Several boxes can be installed in different locations across a façade to increase shelter opportunities for butterflies. A small amount of dry leaves and twigs can be placed inside to create a suitable resting space.

Siting & Installation
Install the box in a sheltered position where it is protected from wind and where rain cannot enter. The installation height is not important, although placing the box at eye level makes it easier to check whether it is being used.
The box can be incorporated into masonry and installed slightly recessed if required. It may then be finished with brick slips or render to integrate it more discreetly into the façade.
For best results, site the box near a food-rich environment with native flowers available from early spring through to late summer.
Maintenance
Cleaning is not required. Butterflies use the box as a shelter rather than a nest, so it should not become heavily soiled.
