The Corsica Bee & Insect Hotel (XL) is a large, multi-habitat structure designed to provide nesting and shelter opportunities for solitary bees and a wide range of beneficial insects. Its varied internal materials create suitable conditions for species such as solitary bees and solitary wasps, as well as other insects including lacewings, ladybirds, parasitic wasps and spiders.
This insect hotel is well suited to use in gardens, parks, conservation areas, schools and other public or educational spaces, where it can act as both a functional wildlife feature and an engaging focal point.
Design & Habitats
The hotel combines multiple natural materials to cater for different insect requirements. Bamboo tubes and drilled birch logs provide nesting cavities for solitary bees and wasps, while limestone and other textured elements offer shelter for a broader range of invertebrates.
The main structure is made from FSC®-certified whitewood, with a roof constructed from FSC®-certified exterior plywood finished with roofing leather. The supporting legs are made from FSC®-certified oak and are fitted with a protective rubber seal at the base to help extend their lifespan.
Installation & Siting
The Corsica Insect Hotel should be positioned in a sunny location, ideally facing south and close to nectar-rich plants. It can be installed directly into the ground using the supplied oak legs, mounted onto a wall, or installed on a flat or green roof.
For ground installation, the legs should be attached to the hotel using the pre-drilled holes and supplied screws. Two holes approximately 50 cm deep should be prepared, with the hotel set in place so the section of each leg with the protective black coating sits just above ground level. A rear support post can also be fixed to the back of the hotel and anchored into the ground for additional stability.
Maintenance
The hotel is finished with a clear, water-based varnish. Treating the wood periodically with a wildlife-friendly preservative will help maintain its condition. The bamboo tubes should be checked regularly and replaced at least every three years, or sooner if damaged or missing. Reapplying a protective coating to the lower sections of the legs near ground level every couple of years will also help increase longevity.
