The Green&Blue BeePot (Large) is a combined solitary bee house and concrete planter, designed for use in gardens, allotments and urban spaces. It brings together a nesting site for solitary bees with a built-in planter for bee-friendly plants, providing food and shelter in the same location.

The BeePot (Large) is inspired by Green&Blue’s award-winning Bee Brick and is designed and made in the UK. Its compact form and simple design make it suitable for domestic gardens as well as balconies and other smaller outdoor spaces.

Solitary bees rely on small cavities to nest and complete their life cycle. In gardens and urban environments, these natural nesting features are often limited. Providing a dedicated nesting space alongside suitable planting helps support local solitary bee populations.

Materials

The BeePot is made from cast concrete. Green&Blue use up to 75% waste material from the Cornish china clay industry in the concrete mix.

Design and function

The bee house section contains multiple cavities where solitary bees lay their eggs, sealing the entrances with mud or chewed vegetation. Offspring emerge in the spring and repeat the nesting cycle. The integrated planter allows pollinator-friendly planting to be positioned alongside the nesting site, helping to provide a nearby food source.

Suitable species

The BeePot provides nesting cavities for solitary bees, particularly species such as red mason bees and leafcutter bees. Solitary bees do not live in hives, do not produce honey and are non-aggressive, making them safe to encourage around children and pets.

Dimensions and weight

  • Dimensions: 225 × 150 × 152 mm
  • Weight: 8 kg (unpackaged)

Siting and positioning

Position in a warm, sunny location, ideally south-facing, with no vegetation blocking the nesting holes. It is recommended to place the BeePot at least 0.5 metres above ground level.

Maintenance

The BeePot is designed to be low maintenance. Nesting activity can be observed throughout the season, with bees emerging naturally in spring. No regular cleaning is required.

Fire Rating

The concrete used to manufacture the BeePot has been independently tested to EN 13501-1 and achieves an A1 fire classification. This confirms the material is non-combustible and does not contribute to fire growth or spread, making it suitable for use in buildings where fire performance is important.

Materials The Beepot is made from cast concrete. Green&Blue use up to 75% waste materials from the Cornish China Clay industry in their concrete

Dimensions 225mm x 150mm x 152mm

Positioning The Beepot should be positioned in a warm sunny spot, south facing, with no vegetation in front of the holes. Ideally placed at least 1/2 metre from the ground.

More information The Beepot bee hotel has cavities where solitary bees, mainly leaf cutter and red mason, will lay their eggs, sealing the entrance with mud or chewed up vegetation. Offspring emerge in the Spring and begin the process of nesting again, repeating the cycle. The Beepot features a planter to the side where you can ensure bee-friendly planting means there's a vital food source for bees right on their doorstep.

Solitary bees are facing a dramatic decline in numbers due to disease, an increase in chemical use and habitat loss. The role they play in pollination accounts for around 1/3 of the food we eat and they are therefore a vital part of our environment. The Beepot is perfect for urban spaces and places where there may not be alternative nesting sites for bees and is a beautiful concrete planter.

Solitary bees are harmless and will not sting you unless you squash them, even then their stings are not painful, meaning they are safe to encourage around pets and children.
