The Large Bee Block is a compact nesting block for solitary bees, designed for use in gardens, allotments and landscaping schemes, or for integration into walls as part of construction projects. It can be used as a freestanding feature or built into masonry to provide additional nesting habitat where natural sites are limited.

Designed and made in the UK by Green&Blue, the Large Bee Block provides nesting space for cavity-nesting solitary bees. These bees play an important role in pollination and are non-swarming, do not produce honey and have no queen to defend, making them safe to encourage around children and pets.

Design & Use

The block contains moulded cavities where solitary bees lay their eggs. Entrances are sealed by the bees using mud or chewed vegetation, depending on species. New bees emerge the following spring and the nesting cycle continues.

The Large Bee Block works well as a decorative feature in gardens or allotments and can also be incorporated into walls, extensions or landscape structures to create long-term nesting habitat.

Construction

The Large Bee Block can be built directly into walls using mortar, in place of a standard masonry unit, or positioned freestanding in outdoor spaces. Its simple form makes it suitable for new builds, retrofit projects and landscaping features.

Siting & Positioning

For best results, the Large Bee Block should be positioned in a warm, sunny location facing south, with no vegetation blocking the nesting cavities. It should be installed at least 1 metre above ground level, with no maximum height.

Materials & Specifications

  • Material: Cast concrete made with up to 70% recycled material from the Cornish China Clay industry
  • Dimensions: 105 × 105 × 105 mm
  • Weight: Approx. 2.8 kg (unpackaged)
  • Design: Solid block with moulded nesting cavities

A simple, durable way to support solitary bees through garden design and biodiversity-focused construction.

Fire Rating

The concrete used to manufacture the Large Bee Block has been independently tested to EN 13501-1 and achieves an A1 fire classification. This confirms the material is non-combustible and does not contribute to fire growth or spread, making it suitable for use in buildings where fire performance is important.

The Large Bee Block is designed and made by Green&Blue in the UK.
