Dormouse Footprint Tracking Tunnel with Ply Insert

The Dormouse Footprint Tracking Tunnel with Plywood Insert is designed for use in dormouse surveys, providing a non-invasive method of detecting the presence of hazel dormice (Muscardinus avellanarius) in a range of habitats.

Developed by PTES, this method is widely used in hedgerows, woodland and scrub. It allows surveyors to identify dormouse presence through distinctive footprints, without the need to disturb animals or rely solely on traditional nest tube checks.

How It Works

The tunnel consists of a square plastic tube with a flat plywood insert. Paper and an ink pad are placed inside the tunnel on the insert. As animals pass through, they walk across the ink pad and leave footprints on the paper, which can then be analysed.

Dormouse footprints are distinctive and can be differentiated from those of wood mice and other small arboreal mammals.
