The Green&Blue BatBlock is a built-in bat roost designed to be incorporated into the masonry of new builds. It provides roosting space for crevice-dwelling bat species and can be used to create either summer maternity roosts or winter hibernation roosts, depending on its orientation.
The BatBlock is designed and made in the UK by Green&Blue and is manufactured to standard UK block proportions, allowing it to be installed in place of a conventional brick or block during construction.
Made from cast concrete using up to 75% waste material from the Cornish china clay industry. It incorporates an internal FSC-certified wooden panel to provide a suitable surface for bats to cling to within the roost.
Suitable species
The BatBlock is designed for crevice-dwelling bats that naturally roost within narrow gaps and cavities in buildings.
Dimensions and weight
- Dimensions: 215 × 440 × 120 mm (+15 mm fascia depth)
- Weight: approximately 15 kg (unpackaged)
Siting and positioning
The BatBlock should be positioned at least 4 metres above ground level. It is best installed in proximity to vegetation and linear landscape features such as hedgerows, which bats use for navigation and foraging.
South- or west-facing elevations are suitable for summer maternity roosts, while north-facing elevations are recommended for winter hibernation roosts.
The Bat Block is built directly into brickwork or blockwork using standard mortar, in place of a conventional brick or block, as part of the main building structure.
Maintenance
Bats and their roosts are protected by law, and it is important that roosts are not disturbed. The Bat Block is designed to be maintenance free, with an entrance that allows droppings to fall clear naturally.
Purchase Options - Fire Rating
The BatBlock is available in two options: non-fire rated, or with fire-rated component materials for projects where fire performance evidence may be required.
For the fire-rated option, the BatBlock is manufactured using a concrete structure classified as A1 under EN 13501-1. The adhesive used to bond the structure is classified as A2 under EN 13501-1. This applies only to the materials stated and should not be taken as a fire-resistance rating for the complete installed product.
Conservation partnership
The Bat Block is produced in collaboration with the ROOST Partnership, a conservation-led scheme run by the Bat Conservation Trust in partnership with manufacturers of bat access and roosting products.
Ten per cent of the revenue from each Bat Block sold is donated to the Bat Conservation Trust through the ROOST Partnership.
The Bat Block bat brick is designed and made by Green&Blue in the UK.
