The Green&Blue SwiftBlock is a built-in nesting box designed to create long-term nesting space for swifts within buildings. It can be incorporated into new builds or retrofitted into existing properties and provides a discreet, durable solution to support a species that has experienced significant population decline.
The SwiftBlock is designed and made in the UK by Green&Blue and is manufactured to standard UK block size, allowing it to be integrated into masonry with minimal visual impact.
It features an internal nesting bowl and a small entrance hole sized to allow swift access while deterring larger birds and predators. Fitting instructions are cast directly into the surface of the block to support correct installation.
The block is made from cast concrete using up to 75% recycled material from the Cornish china clay industry.
Suitable species
The SwiftBlock is designed specifically for swifts. Swifts are migratory birds that visit the UK during the summer breeding season and rely on crevices and cavities in buildings for nesting.
Swift populations in the UK have declined by over 50% in the last 20 years, largely due to the loss of nesting sites caused by modern building practices. Providing dedicated nesting spaces within buildings helps replace lost habitat and supports breeding swifts returning to the same sites each year.
Dimensions and weight
- External dimensions: 440 × 215 × 160 mm (+15 mm fascia depth)
- Internal dimensions: 360 × 170 × 110 mm
- Weight: approximately 16 kg (unpackaged)
Siting and positioning
The Swift Block should be positioned at least 5 metres above ground level. It should be installed on a side of the building that receives shade during the day, or beneath an overhang or eaves, and located away from windows, vents and potential predator access.
Clear adjacent airspace is essential, as swifts require unobstructed, high-speed direct flight access to the nest entrance.
Installation
The Swift Block is designed to be built directly into brickwork or blockwork during construction or retrofit, replacing a standard block. It can be rendered up to the entrance feature as required.
Maintenance-free once installed.
Purchase Options - Fire Rating
The SwiftBlock is available in two options: non-fire rated, or with fire-rated component materials for projects where fire performance evidence may be required.
For the fire-rated option, the SwiftBlock is manufactured using a concrete structure classified as A1 fire-rated under EN 13501-1. The adhesive used to bond the structure is classified as A2 fire-rated under EN 13501-1. These fire classifications are for the materials we use to manufacture the product, as opposed to a fire-resistance rating for the finished product.
