WoodStone Built-In Swift Box (Flush Face)

The WoodStone Built-In Swift Nest Box is a durable, integrated nesting solution designed specifically to match UK brick size standards. It offers a true “fit and forget” option for providing long-term nesting habitat for swifts within new builds and renovation projects.

Designed to be built directly into masonry walls, this nest box is well suited to the high, sheltered locations swifts naturally favour, such as beneath eaves. Manufactured from WoodStone, it provides excellent insulation against temperature extremes and offers protection from predators, supporting stable nesting conditions throughout the breeding season.

This swift box is also available in an alternative version for a different wall finish. The rendered wall version has a protruding entrance designed to sit proud during installation, so the builder can render or finish around it and leave the entrance flush with the final wall surface. The flush face version does not have a protruding entrance, so it should be built directly into brickwork or blockwork with the front face sitting flush at the point of installation.

Construction & Integration

The nest box is engineered for seamless incorporation into the outer wall of a building. It sits flush with the external wall face and protrudes approximately 50 mm into the cavity, allowing insulation to continue behind the unit when installed against a heated internal space. This helps prevent the formation of thermal bridges.

The internal cavity is divided into two nesting compartments, and the entrance hole can be oriented to the left or right to suit the building design. Thanks to its flat WoodStone front, the box is also suitable for rendered walls; a former should be used during rendering to ensure the entrance remains clear and correctly sized.

Siting & Installation

For best results, install the Swift built-in nest box on a north- or east-facing gable end, approximately three courses below the roof apex. This position typically provides suitable height and minimal disturbance while aligning with natural swift flight paths.

A clear approach to the entrance is essential, so avoid trees or shrubs directly in front of the wall. As swifts are colonial nesters, multiple boxes should be installed together with a minimum spacing of 40 cm between units. As a general guide, one nest box per dwelling is recommended on new developments.

Maintenance

This integrated nest box requires no routine maintenance. Swifts use very little nesting material and will remove excess material themselves, helping to keep the façade clean.
