Q. What is the best way to position the microphone to protect it from water?
A. We recommend positioning the microphone so that it points parallel to the ground, or even slightly downward.
Q. How can I use the SMM-U1 for applications requiring directionality?
A. The microphone can be adapted for directional sensitivity with the available SM3 Horn Attachment which turns the omnidirectional ultrasonic microphone
into a highly directional microphone while preserving call quality. It is worth noting that the attachment remains weatherproof at angles up to 45-degrees.
Q. How do I install a microphone windshield?
A. Windscreens should be installed on SMM-U1 microphones for long-term
deployments in all areas susceptible to heavy wind-driven rain. Secure the windscreens for the SMM-U1 microphone with the included C-clip. Make sure there is an air gap between the windscreen and the microphone as shown below. (Do not pull the windscreen down tightly). For the SMX-Horn directional attachment, secure the large windscreen with the included zip-tie as shown below. The exact positioning is not important.
Q. How will the windscreen impact recordings?
A. The windscreens will attenuate ultrasound by only a few dB when dry. However, they will block most ultrasound when soaked with water, until they dry. Drying time can vary significantly based on temperature, humidity, and wind.
Q. What should I do to the high pass filter if I expect bats to vocalise below 16 kHz?
A. For bats, the SMM-U1 microphone has a built-in 4-pole filter at 8 kHz - set this HPF to 1 kHz and the 8 kHz filter in the microphone will reduce acoustic sound below 8 kHz. For those who do not expect bats below 16 kHz, it is best to use set this filter to 16 kHz and filter out more acoustic noises that might cause non-bat recordings to occur. At 16 kHz setting the filter is a four-pole filter.
Q. How do I measure microphone sensitivity
A. Firstly you need an Ultrasonic Calibrator, which helps you test both the microphone and the full recorder system. To test a microphone, the calibrator generates a calibrated 40 kHz tone. There will be instructions included with this device.
