The Pole Mounted Starling Tower provides a practical nesting solution for species such as starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) where traditional nesting sites on buildings are unavailable or unsuitable. Designed as a standalone structure, it offers multiple nest spaces while avoiding the mess sometimes associated with façade-mounted starling boxes.
The tower includes nine individual nest boxes beneath a single roof, creating nesting opportunities for several breeding pairs. In addition to starlings, the chambers may also be used by house sparrows and tree sparrows depending on the surrounding habitat.
Colony Nesting Design
- 9 individual nest boxes within a single structure
- Provides nesting opportunities for multiple breeding pairs
- Suitable for starlings and other cavity-nesting songbirds
- Standalone tower design avoids façade fouling
Construction
The nesting tower is built around a robust metal frame with exterior plywood panels finished in environmentally responsible Ecolabel paint (RAL 9010). The roof is covered with black roofing slate and includes an additional ventilated roof layer to help regulate temperature and prevent overheating during warm conditions.
- Metal structural frame
- Exterior plywood construction
- Ecolabel paint finish (RAL 9010)
- Black roofing slate roof covering
- Ventilated double-roof structure
When properly installed, the tower is designed to withstand wind speeds up to Beaufort scale 10.
Installation
The starling tower is supplied with a galvanised steel mast measuring 6 metres in length. The mast includes a ground section to ensure stable and secure installation.
- 6 m galvanised thick-walled steel mast
- Ground installation system included
- Supplied with quick-set concrete
- Temporary supports included to stabilise the mast during curing
The mast should typically be installed 1–1.5 metres into the ground depending on local soil conditions. Establishing prickly vegetation around the base can help discourage vandalism.
Siting Guidance
The tower can be installed wherever starlings are present or where new nesting opportunities are needed, including gardens, farmland, parks, green spaces and construction sites. The surrounding habitat should ideally include feeding areas such as open grassland or farmland.
Starlings may use the nesting chambers throughout the year, including during the winter months.
Maintenance
Each nest box can be opened from the front for inspection or cleaning by removing two screws from the front panel. Aside from occasional repainting of the tower head if required, the structure generally requires very little maintenance.
