The WoodStone Estella House Sparrow Nest Box is a durable, built-in nesting solution designed to support declining house sparrow populations. Ideal for integration into new-build projects, it provides a secure and thermally stable nesting space within the fabric of a building.
With two internal breeding chambers, the Estella box is particularly suited to colony nesting, helping to recreate the communal nesting conditions that house sparrows naturally prefer.
Key Features
- Constructed from WoodStone® for strength, insulation and long lifespan
- Two internal nesting chambers to support colony breeding behaviour
- Can be built into brickwork or externally mounted
- Thermally stable environment protects against temperature extremes
- Robust design helps deter predators and weather damage
- Front-opening panel allows cleaning if required
Design and Use
This nest box is designed to be installed flush within a façade, matching standard construction formats and providing a discreet nesting solution. The generous internal depth offers suitable space for breeding, while the 34mm entrance hole is sized for house sparrows.
Although designed for house sparrows, other small cavity-nesting species such as tits may also make use of the box.
Siting & Installation
For best results, install the box high on the building, ideally under the eaves. A minimum height of 3 metres is recommended. North- and east-facing aspects are preferred, although sheltered positions under roof overhangs are also suitable.
As sparrows are colonial nesters, installing multiple boxes together is strongly recommended, with at least 50cm spacing between units. Avoid positioning directly above doors or windows.
Maintenance
The box can be opened for cleaning if required. Cleaning should take place outside the breeding season, typically from October onwards. Sparrows may continue to use the box for roosting during winter.
