The Sparrow Block is an integrated nest box designed to create nesting space for house sparrows within new builds or existing properties. It can be built directly into brick or blockwork or retrofitted onto external walls, providing a long-term solution for supporting this declining species.

House sparrow numbers in the UK have fallen significantly in recent decades, leading to their inclusion on the red list of conservation concern. While the causes of decline are complex, the provision of suitable nesting habitat is recognised as an important measure to support colony recovery.

Design & Use

The Sparrow Block features a small entrance designed to allow access for sparrows while deterring larger birds and predators. Its standard UK block size enables it to replace a conventional block when built into masonry, without affecting the appearance or structure of the wall.

Construction & Installation

The Sparrow Block can be built directly into new brick or blockwork using mortar, in place of a standard brick or block. It can also be surface-mounted to existing walls using the rear fixing points and a compatible fixing kit.

For best results, the Sparrow Block should be installed at least 3 metres above ground level, with the entrance facing north or east. Positioning under roof eaves and away from windows, doors and vents helps minimise disturbance, as sparrows are sensitive to activity close to the nest.

Maintenance

Sparrows and their nests are protected by law. Cleaning or inspection of the nest box should only take place outside the nesting season, between September and January. Remove old nesting material before replacing the front panel. Maintenance should only be carried out where safe access is available and with appropriate assistance.
