The Swift Block is an integrated nest box designed to create nesting space for swifts within new buildings or existing properties. It can be built directly into masonry or surface-mounted onto external walls, offering a practical and discreet way to support this declining species.

Swift populations in the UK have declined significantly in recent decades, largely due to the loss of nesting habitat in buildings. Providing suitable nesting sites within the built environment is recognised as an important step in helping to support returning swifts during the breeding season.

Design & Use

The Swift Block features an internal nesting bowl to support breeding, along with a small entrance designed to deter larger birds and predators. Its standard UK block size allows it to replace a conventional block when built into walls, without altering the appearance or structure of the building.

Construction & Installation

The Swift Block can be built directly into new brick or blockwork using mortar, in place of a standard block. It can also be surface-mounted onto existing walls using a compatible fixing kit, which is supplied with stainless steel screws, wall plugs and washers when the surface-mounted option is selected.

For best results, the Swift Block should be installed at least 5 metres above ground level, ideally in a shaded location or beneath an overhang or eaves. The box should be positioned away from windows, vents and areas of disturbance, with clear airspace in front to allow high-speed direct access.

Maintenance

Once installed, the Swift Block requires minimal maintenance. Swifts use very little nesting material, helping to keep surrounding façades clean.
