The long-lasting Eco Crevice Bat Box provides a secure roosting space for a range of UK bat species. The outer shell is made from UV-stabilised recycled plastic, while the internal chamber is constructed from rough-textured FSC-certified OSB to offer excellent grip for bats to climb, hang and roost. A self-cleaning design means no maintenance is required, making these boxes ideal for long-term bat conservation projects.
Features
- Long-lasting sealed protection with a waterproof outer shell made from recycled plastic
- Internal wooden chamber provides an inviting roosting space for bats
- No maintenance required thanks to the self-cleaning angled baffle design
- Black exterior absorbs the sun’s heat to help keep the box warm and well insulated
- Internal ceramic tiles improve temperature stability and can be removed or replaced (replacements available on demand)
- Grooved landing ladder at the base helps bats enter the box more easily
Construction
The outer shell of these bat boxes is constructed from recycled plastic made from bale wrap, welded together to create a durable, long-lasting and weatherproof housing. Inside, the roost chamber is made from FSC Certified oriented strand board (OSB), produced from compressed waste wood chips and flakes. This gives a naturally rough surface, providing plenty of grip for bats to move around, hang and roost from.
Crevice
Within the UK there are a variety of bat species, each with different roosting requirements. This crevice box has two internal crevices, each 22 mm wide – ideal for crevice-roosting bats such as pipistrelles.
Cleaning & Maintenance
No active cleaning or maintenance is required. Any droppings naturally fall out of the entrance slot thanks to the angled baffles inside the box. The protected landing ladder at the base helps bats access the roost safely while keeping the entrance area clear.
Installation & Positioning
The ideal locations for these bat boxes are on buildings or mature trees where they can be mounted at a higher level in a sheltered, sunny spot. For best results, install multiple boxes facing in different directions to provide a variety of temperature and light conditions throughout the day.
It can sometimes take several years before bats take up residence, so patience is important. Signs that the box is being used include droppings on the landing area and chittering noises from inside the box on warm afternoons and evenings.
