The Barn Owl Nest Box is a purpose-built roost and breeding box designed in collaboration with the Barn Owl Trust and other specialists. It provides a secure and weather-protected nesting space for barn owls in both internal and external locations.
In modern landscapes, natural tree cavities are increasingly scarce. Purpose-made nest boxes play an important role in supporting barn owl populations by providing safe nesting and roosting opportunities where natural sites are limited.
Design Features
- Large single-chamber nesting space
- Entrance hole positioned high on the front panel
- 44cm drop from entrance to floor to prevent premature fledging
- Full-width landing and exercise platform
- Generous weather canopy protecting entrance and platform
- Drained floor to reduce moisture build-up
- Two large side inspection hatches for cleaning and monitoring
The double access hatches allow full access to the floor area for maintenance. They are designed to minimise rain ingress and are secured with toggle fasteners.
Construction
Manufactured from precision-cut, FSC®-certified exterior grade plywood, the box is treated with a non-toxic, water-based preservative for durability. Key joints are silicone sealed to reduce water ingress, creating a dry and draught-resistant internal environment.

Maintenance
Barn owl boxes require periodic cleaning to remove accumulated pellets and debris. If left unmanaged, debris build-up can reduce internal depth and increase the risk of young birds exiting prematurely. Cleaning should take place outside the breeding season.
Please note: Barn Owls are a Schedule 1 species under the Wildlife and Countryside Act. An occupied nest box must not be disturbed during the breeding season except by a licensed individual. Cleaning and inspection outside the breeding season does not require a licence.
A robust, specialist-designed nesting solution suitable for supporting barn owl conservation in rural and agricultural landscapes.

SITING: Back panel extends above and below box for fixing to tree or wall etc. Fixing holes in panel extensions. Large holes in the upper extension for the rope can be used to carry the box up the ladder to the mounting position. Designed for use either inside barn or other suitable building or externally fixed to a tree etc.
When fixing the box to a tree, owls benefit from the additional shelter. Place in open countryside in isolated trees or trees that overlook open habitat. Avoid urban, suburban, dense forest, and high mountain areas. Do not place within 1 km of motorways.
MAINTENANCE: It is important that the box depth is maintained by clearing out the box once it has more than about 80mm of nest debris. If Jackdaws use the box, it must be cleaned out every year (wear gloves and a dust mask). Boxes used only by breeding Barn Owls will need clearing out every 2 or 3 years.
