If you need a flexibly designed bat box then the Schwegler 1FQ is a good option, which can be used as a roost, to form a colony or nursery to shelter their young. Bats search for and inhabit spaces that suit their own particular habits and requirements; their differing preferences have been carefully reflected in the design of this product.

Key Features:

  • Aesthetically appealing
  • Built for fitting to an external wall
  • Ideal for bats that inhabit buildings
  • The roughened front panel enables bats to land and hang on to it securely
  • Entry is via a simple step-like recess so even inexperienced young bats can get to grips with it
  • Inside the back of the box are rough pieces of wood that keep bats warm and can be used as perches.
  • The woodcrete shell provides a cool rough interior which the bats can grip.

Why do we need to protect bats?

Bats play an important role within our environment. As well as performing some pollination, bats are a natural control of insect populations as these are their main food source. Bats are also a good indicator species of environmental health, with changes in populations reflecting local biodiversity.

Bats are a schedule 1 protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. It is illegal for any member of the public to disturb a roost, handle or kill any bat. Bat boxes therefore may only be inspected by a licensed bat worker. However, you can monitor your bat box without disturbance, look for mouse-sized droppings beneath the box as a clue to occupation or observe from a distance at dusk to see if bats are exiting the box to hunt.

MATERIAL: Woodcrete

DIMENSIONS (MM): 350 x 600 x 90

WEIGHT (KG): 15.8

INCLUDES: Bat Box, screws, and plugs.

SPECIES: Bats that inhabit buildings.

SITING: Position 3 metres or higher above the ground in a place where there is a clear flight path for bats entering and leaving the box. Using the four screws and plugs provided (see figure 1), the box can be easily attached to most types of external brick, timber, or concrete walls (see figures 3 and 4). It will also attract Bats if it is placed inside a roof space or inside historic buildings. When it is fixed to timber we recommend that the gaps between the wall and the box are sealed with silicone to prevent moisture from being trapped.

MAINTENANCE: The hole at the bottom provides the entrance and allows droppings to fall out. The box requires no maintenance or cleaning.
