The Schwegler 1FQ Bat Box is a large, wall-mounted summer roost designed specifically for building-dwelling bat species. Suitable for use as a day roost, nursery or small colony site, it has been developed to reflect the varied roosting preferences of bats that inhabit buildings.
Designed for installation on external walls, the 1FQ provides multiple internal hanging areas with differing light and temperature conditions. This allows bats to select the most suitable microclimate within the box.
Design & Internal Structure
The interior is divided into two main sections, with three distinct hanging zones offering varied brightness and warmth. Gaps range from approximately 1.5–3.5 cm, creating suitable crevice spaces. Rough internal surfaces and incorporated wooden elements provide insulation and secure grip points for roosting bats.

Material & Durability
The box is manufactured from SCHWEGLER wood-concrete (woodcrete), a weather-resistant, breathable and rot-proof material designed for long service life. The design prevents water ingress, and all metal components in contact with bats are rustproof. The front panel is factory-painted; it can be repainted with a breathable masonry paint if required. The rear panel is untreated to allow better bonding if rendered into a façade.

Installation
- Install at a minimum height of 3 metres
- Ensure a clear flight path to and from the box

- When fixing to timber, seal gaps with silicone to prevent moisture trapping
The box is secured using the four screws and plugs provided.
Maintenance
The entrance opening at the base allows droppings to fall out naturally. The box is designed to be maintenance-free and does not require routine cleaning.

SITING: Position 3 metres or higher above the ground in a place where there is a clear flight path for bats entering and leaving the box. Using the four screws and plugs provided (see figure 1), the box can be easily attached to most types of external brick, timber, or concrete walls (see figures 3 and 4). It will also attract Bats if it is placed inside a roof space or inside historic buildings. When it is fixed to timber we recommend that the gaps between the wall and the box are sealed with silicone to prevent moisture from being trapped.
MAINTENANCE: The hole at the bottom provides the entrance and allows droppings to fall out. The box requires no maintenance or cleaning.
