The 1FQ bat box by Schwegler has been carefully designed for use as a roost, to form a colony or nursery to shelter their young. Externally it's visually appealing to humans, which is good as it is built for fitting to an external wall and is ideal for bats that inhabit buildings.

The entrance at the base of the unit also allows droppings to fall straight out of the unit. This means there is no maintenance and no cleaning.

Easy to install with all necessary fixings for attaching the unit to timber, brick or concrete walls.

The 1FQ provides a variety of different areas, including crevices and cavities, to attract bats as they search for spaces that suit their own habits and needs. For example:

1) To help bats land and hang on securely, the outside of the front panel is roughened.
2) Entry is via a simple step-like recess so even inexperienced young bats can quickly get used to it.
3) Inside the back of the box includes rough pieces of wood (good insulators ie warm) that the bats can use as perches
4) The woodcrete shell provides a cool rough interior which the bats can grip.

Altogether there are three different areas inside from which bats can hang (plus other places to hide), offering different brightness levels and temperature, with crevices ranging from 1.5 to 3.5cm in width. The two main areas can be inspected by removing the front panel.

The front panel is painted a light colour during its manufacture. If the colour needs to be changed, then please use an air-permeable wall paint. The rear of the unit is untreated which makes for better content with mortar (if installed within the exterior rendering). Any metal parts are rustproof if they may come into contact with the animals.

One more thing to know – the bat box is made from Schwegler’s Woodcrete, a tough, weather-resistant blend of wood and concrete that will last for years and won’t rot, warp, crack or leak. Woodcrete is breathable/porous, so it maintains a stable temperature inside and also provides a rough surface for the bats to cling to. Combine all this with a box design that prevents water entering it and you have a unit that will protect bats for decades.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Bats are a schedule 1 protected species under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. It is illegal for any member of the public to disturb a roost, handle or kill any bat. Bat boxes therefore may only be inspected by a licensed bat worker. However, you can monitor your bat box without disturbance, look for mouse-sized droppings beneath the box as a clue to occupation or observe from a distance at dusk to see if bats are exiting the box to hunt.

Mounting:

For installation on external walls. It can also be placed inside a roof space.

The box comes with four screws and wall plugs which make it easy to fit to most types of external brick and concrete walls or timber.

We recommend sealing (with silicone) any gaps at the rear if fitted to timber, to prevent trapped moisture buildup.

We recommend fitting at least 3m above the ground, so a stepladder or short ladder will be needed.
The box is somewhat heavy at 15.8Kg but installs easily as it breaks down into two separate pieces.

Aspect:

The ideal aspect is so the box receives at least some sun during the day. Ensure there is a clear flight path so that bats can enter and leave the box freely. If there is an existing feeding or flight route you are more likely to get occupation.

Fixings included:

Includes: Bat Box, screws and plugs.

Cleaning:

No cleaning needed as the droppings fall straight out of the open base of the unit.
