This semi-open built-in brick is ideal as a breeding ground for so-called semi-burrow breeding birds such as Black Redstart and White Wagtail. Species such as the Robin and House Sparrows can also use it. The location of the installation partly determines which species use it.

The Built-In Half Open WoodStone Bird Nest Box is designed for seamless integration into brickwork, providing a durable and discreet nesting space for a range of small bird species. Manufactured to match standard UK brick dimensions, the box can be built directly into new-build masonry so it sits flush with the wall surface.

This half-open design offers suitable nesting conditions for species that prefer more open-fronted cavities, such as robins, wagtails and redstarts. The species that ultimately use the box will depend on the surrounding habitat and its placement on the building.

Design & Construction

  • Designed to match standard UK brick dimensions
  • Suitable for integration into brickwork during construction
  • Can also be mounted externally on existing walls
  • Half-open front design for species that prefer open nest sites
  • Raised entrance edge allows a neat plastered finish
  • Made from durable WoodStone® (wood concrete)

The nest box is manufactured from WoodStone®, a robust blend of FSC®-certified wood fibres and concrete that offers excellent insulation, weather resistance and long service life.

Suitable Species

The half-open design may be used by several species depending on the surrounding habitat, including:

  • Robin
  • Wren
  • Black Redstart
  • Common Redstart
  • White Wagtail
  • Yellow Wagtail
  • Spotted Flycatcher
  • House Sparrow

Siting Guidance

  • Install preferably beneath eaves or roof overhangs
  • Recommended installation height: 3–4 metres or higher
  • North or east-facing façades are preferred
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight
  • Avoid southwest-facing walls where heavy rain exposure may occur
  • Do not install directly above doors or windows

When built into the façade, the entrance edge can be plastered to create a clean finish that blends with the surrounding wall.

Maintenance

This nest box is non-openable and requires very little maintenance. If required, nesting material can be removed through the entrance opening during the winter months when the box is not in use.
